Yuki Matsumoto

About The Artist

Yuki Matsumoto, born and raised in the historic city of Kyoto, creates art deeply rooted in Japanese tradition while embracing a modern aesthetic. Kyoto’s serene landscapes, with its temples, bamboo forests, and seasonal shifts, serve as Yuki’s constant source of inspiration. He often walks through the Arashiyama bamboo grove, sketchbook in hand, capturing fleeting moments of harmony between humans and nature.

Yuki’s style combines traditional sumi-e (ink wash painting) with contemporary minimalism. His animal portraits, from graceful cranes to curious foxes, embody the concept of ma, the Japanese appreciation of space and silence. He prefers natural pigments and handmade washi paper to honor the authenticity of his craft.

His art has been featured in exhibitions across Japan and internationally, with his standout series Seasons of Kyoto earning his the prestigious Kokoro Art Award. Yuki believes that his work is a bridge between the past and the present, inviting viewers to find peace in simplicity.
